International airport redevelopment and modernization

Click on image to enlarge This project was undertaken to
transform an unworkable layout of nine airline terminals around a severely congested beltway into a unified and coherent state-of-the-art facility of considerable grandeur. The goal was to return one of the world's busiest airports to its proper role as the premier gateway to North America. The 150-acre master plan was based on the realization that the airport could only expand inside its loop of terminals. The solution involves a
Central Terminal Complex (CTC) that contains no actual gates, but serves as an arrival, departure and transfer point for some 50 million passengers annually, offering unprecedented services and amenities. At the heart of the complex is a domed Meeter & Greeter Hall, a vast public space that celebrates the experience of entry into the United States. The CTC connects with the individual terminals by people-movers and underground tunnels for automated baggage handling. The
design creates over one mile of new curb frontage for buses/HOVs, and new roadways to facilitate airport access. The multilayered network of interwoven roads, walkways, tunnels and people movers is integral to the ultimate goal of alleviating congestion while expanding international passenger facilities to accommodate increased air travel in the 21st century.
